“Liquidity Is The Last Refuge Of The Scoundrel”

“At some point, great liquidity, or the perception of it, may itself encourage more speculative trading, even in longer-term instruments. Presumably conservative institutional investors are tempted to turn over positions much more rapidly, at the expense of careful analysis of basic values. In the light of events, careful consideration of the benefits and possibly damaging consequences of increased liquidity has become the subject of new studies and commentary by economists and regulators. A consensus may be developing that beyond some point, little or no public benefit may be evident.”

To College, or Not To College?

tetw:

What higher education is really about…

The University Has No Clothes by Daniel B. Smith - A critical review of the spate of prominent attacks aimed at college education.

Learning by Degress by Rebecca Mead - A strong argument against measuring the value of a degree in purely economic terms.

In the Basement of the Ivory Tower by Professor X - An anonymous instructor at a low-end college makes the case that university isn’t for everyone.

How I Got my D.I.Y. Degree by William Wimsatt - The author offers an interesting if impractical programme for lifelong self education.

Lost in the Meritocracy by Walter Kirn - A more personal view from a survivor of one of America’s top educational institutions.

Will be reading later.

That raises an interesting question. Great visualization.

What's Wrong With the Teenage Mind?

A few interesting points, especially with regard to how important it might be to “learn how to work.”

Plutonomies

In a series of research notes over the past year, Kapur and his team explained that Plutonomies have three basic characteristics. 1. They are all created by “disruptive technology-driven productivity gains, creative financial innovation, capitalist friendly cooperative governments, immigrants…the rule of law and patenting inventions. Often these wealth waves involve great complexity exploited best by the rich and educated of the time.” 2. There is no “average” consumer in Plutonomies. There is only the rich “and everyone else.” The rich account for a disproportionate chunk of the economy, while the non-rich account for “surprisingly small bites of the national pie.” Kapur estimates that in 2005, the richest 20% may have been responsible for 60% of total spending. 3. Plutonomies are likely to grow in the future, fed by capitalist-friendly governments, more technology-driven productivity and globalization.

"This guy is angry. And it was a vigorous sort of anger, not the thin-skinned petulance to which this president has accustomed us. The tone was not whiny but combative. Obama reminded us of Newt Gingrich."

I hadn’t realized that we’d moved beyond the traditional yellow Lego characters, which were only ambiguously ethnic.
